GATE Eligibility & Identification

The GATE Eligibility Process for identifying new GATE students begins in November of each year. New students are notified in December.

GATE Referrals

Referrals for screening for GATE eligibility can be made by teachers, administrators, parents, counselors, and the GATE coordinator.Parents should inform their teacher that they would like their child screened for GATE.

Multiple Criteria Score

GATE identification is based on a student's combined score on:

  1. CST-STAR Test: The scaled scores from the California Standards Test (CST) in English-Language Arts and Math.
  2. Teacher Evaluation Scale: The Classroom teacher uses this scale to assess the GATE eligibility of referred students.

Identified students whose total Multiple Criterion Scale score places them among the top candidates of the intermediate level population become GATE eligible and are invited to participate in the GATE program.
