• GATE students from around the district partnered up with STRAW (Students and Teachers Restoring a Watershed) and Friends of the Petaluma River to study a local creek.  Both organizations provided water quality test kits which gave student's hands on experience.  Teachers from STRAW gave students lessons at the creek and in the classroom.  At the end our time the students were experts on using and reading pH tests, temperature readings, nitrate tests, phosphate tests, and dissolved oxygen tests.

Our guest teachers helped students develop a deeper understanding about where nitrates and phosphates come from and how each test is affected by various factors.

A big, big thank you to our friends at STRAW and FOTPR.

    About Redwood Empire Food Bank:

Since 1987, the Redwood Empire Food Bank's service has grown to meet the rising need for food assistance and expanded to focus on providing as much healthy food as possible and including nutrition education as an integral part of many of our programs. We currently assist over 82,000 Sonoma County residents every month. We provide food through our own three Hunger Relief Initiatives that focus on the unmet needs of low-income children, seniors, and working families. We also are a primary source of food for 178 community based charitable organizations that operate over 276 human service programs helping the needy, disabled and homeless in Sonoma County.

La Tercera wishes to recognize PEF (Petaluma Education Foundation), a Petaluma non-profit organization

for its work in providing funding solutions for area schools in response to major budget deficits throughout the California school system.

In the 2013-2014 school year, La Tercera was the recipient of a $10,000 PEF Impact Grant award which was used to purchase Pearson Project STEM materials.
