Before/Afterschool Care

  • 2020-21 Kids Care Registration begins in March.

Space in Kids Care programs is extremely limited. Once a child is admitted to the Kids Care Expanded Learning Program, that child is guaranteed placement for the following year through priority registration in the spring, based on staffing and grade level space availability. This helps to ensure that student safety and staffing ratios are met. When students enrolled in Kids Care, you are contracting for the entire school year for the specific days of the week. We understand that changes to contracted enrollment days can arise for a variety of reasons. The Site Manager will work to accommodate changes IF grade level space and staffing is available.

Registration forms will not be available until registration begins. Please see the Site Manager to register. IMPORTANT: Submission of a Kids Care registration form and registration fee to anyone other than the Site Manager may delay processing of enrollment requests.

    • March 2nd – 13th – Priority Registration for currently enrolled Kids Care families only. Registration forms will be handed out to families during this time. If the completed registration forms and registration fee are not returned during this priority enrollment period, students will be placed in the open enrollment category.
    • March 23rd – 31st   Open Enrollment – Site Managers will be collecting registration forms during this time.
Open Enrollment priority: 1) any students who qualify under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Act and foster youth, 2) students currently enrolled at a different Kids Care program who are transferring schools, 3) students currently on the Kids Care waiting list, and 4) new students.
    • April 6th Site Managers will notify families of space availability

Registration Fee:  An annual non-refundable registration fee of $25 per family is due upon acceptance into Kids Care.

Note: Students must be enrolled in the school before applying for Kids Care.  However, enrollment in school does not guarantee space in Kids Care, this includes incoming TK and Kinder students.

Toileting - It is important that children are able to use with bathroom facilities without adult assistance. It is understood that on occasion children may have a toiliting accident. They must be able to change clothes and clean themselves. Kids Care staff cannot assist with toileting or change children's clothing. If  you feel your child might need a change of clothes, please feel free to send a bag of clothes labeled with their name.

Children with Special Needs - If our child requires assistance during the school day, he/she may be required to have the same assistance for the Kids Care program. Children with special needs may participate in the Kids Care Expanded Learning Program provided there is no adverse effect upon other program participants, either through direct behavior of the child or by taking away staff time needed by the other children

    Program Fees

When students are enrolled in Kids Care, parents/guardians are reserving the time, space, staffing and program materials for the students, whether they attend or not. Monthly fees are set annually by the Old Adobe Board of Trustees.

Kids Care fee structure is based on the total number of school days in the year and is divided over 9.5 months (August - May) and remains the same for each month. There is no additional fee charged for months with more school days and no proration of fees for months with fewer days.  In other words, there is no additional fee charged for months with more school days and no reduction of fees for months with fewer days, including those with Thanksgiving, Winter and Spring Breaks.

Refunds or adjustments will not be made for changes to or withdrawal from the program, absences, illnesses, holidays, vacations, natural disasters, emergency school closures, or suspensions. Payments are non-refundable.

Payments are due on the 20th of the month prior to service. We accept, cash, checks, debit and credit card payments. A late fee of $25 applies after the 25th of the month and is clearly noted on the monthly contract. Failure to pay fees by the 1st of the month may result in the student being ineligible to attend the program until all fees are current.

    Why Kids Care?

Kids Care is not day care, rather it is an Expanded Learning Program designed to provide a physically and emotionally safe environment, conducive to learning, while improving language arts, math, science, social and communication skills. Programs are designed to serve between 85-150 students per school site. Kids Care adds a strong youth development focus, including life skills, positive communication, conflict resolution, goal setting and decision-making.

Students participate in academic support activities, including daily homework assistance. Along with their friends, students choose from a variety of structured enrichment activities including visual and performing arts, sports and fitness, healthy lifestyles, and project-based and service learning projects designed to support healthy social, emotional, academic and physical development. These enrichment programs provide students with important learning opportunities and rich experiences before school, and after school that complement what students learn during the traditional school day.

All Kids Care Expanded Learning Program sites incorporate best practices and required elements as outlined by the After School Education and Safety (ASES) Program, administered through California Department of Education (CDE).

    Homework Policy

Kids Care is committed to providing an appropriate space, time, materials and resources for students to work on homework during program hours. Kids Care schedules 45 minutes to one hour for grades 1 through 6, Monday through Thursday. Students have an opportunity to work on assigned homework in accordance with OAUSD grade level guidelines on appropriate homework time increments (10 minutes per grade level).

Kids Care staff provide homework support, guidance and clarification when necessary. Staff does not provide one-on-one tutoring or homework correction. Homework is an important part of the home-school connection which provides parents with an opportunity to see what their student is learning. Parents are responsible for reviewing their child's homework every night to make sure it is complete.

Kids Care does not guarantee completion of homework.

Attendance requirements however are more flexible.

La Tercera and Miwok Valley Programs - Kids Care Expanded Learning Programs at La Tercera and Miwok Valley are partially funded through the California Department of Education ASES Program. This voter approved initiative, Propostion 49, established local after school education and enrichment programs. As a funding requirement, students enrolled in the La Tercera and Miwok Valley Kids Care programs are expected to attend the program 5 days per week for the full range of program hours. See Early Release Policy.

Early Release Policy - La Tercera and Miwok Programs  - A signed copy of the Early Releas Policy is required as part of registration in the program. We understand that situations do occur that cause students to need to leave early or miss a day altogether; however it is a CDE policy that "Early Releases" need to  be kept to a minimum. See  the OAUSD Early Release Policy.

Question:  Why is attendance so important for before and after school programs?

Answer: The purpose of the after school program is to support student success in school by providing academic support and enrichment opportunities. An ASES after school program was never intended to be a drop-in or child care program. The legislature determined that regular attendance would serve as the measure for demonstrating compliance with the legislation's purpose and criteria for ongoing progam funding.

    Healthy Snack/Meal

All students receive a free healthy snack/meal which meets federal and state nutrition guidelines.

Students at La Tercera, Loma Vista and Miwok Valley participate in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), which serves free meals to children in at-risk after school programs.  The CACFP meal pattern requires meals which meet the nutritional needs of children, are consistent with Dietary Guidelines for Americans and are appetizing. Meal components are comprised of 5 components: meat/meat alternative, fruit, vegetable, whole grain/bread and milk. Students must take 3 of the 5 components.

Students at Old Adobe and Sonoma Mountain receive a free daily snack. The snack items meets federal & state nutrition guidelines. Snacks are comprised of 2 or more items: milk, fruit/vegetable, grain/bread and/or meat/meat alternative.

Kids Care Centers are Nut Free Zones.  If you send a snack with your child, be sure it does not include any tree nuts (almonds, walnuts, etc.) or peanuts.
