Loving Hands
  • The counselors in Old Adobe Union School District work as a team to bring the most current and compassionate work possible to support students in our district. We will soon have an email availble so that parents can ask general questions where we will be choosing one question a month to answer here in the Counselor Corner under the Parent Questions page. While we are hired to support our students, we are mindful that it "takes a village" and welcome communication from all involved in a child's life. We look forward to working with your children and being as supportive to you as much as we can!

Susan Winters

  • This is Susan Winters, a counselor at Miwok and Old adobe Elementary Schools in Petaluma, CA.

Welcome! I am Susan Winters and I began my work with Old Adobe Union School District in Fall of 2017. I work at Miwok Valley Elementary Charter School on Tuesdays and at Old Adobe Elementary Charter School on Mondays and Thursdays. My past experience includes working in a middle school, a continuation high school and developing and running a College and Career Center in a comprehensive high school. While I love working with every grade and demographic, I have found that working with elementary children is especially rewarding. The young students come to us with open minds and open hearts; they see the world in a way many of us adults have long forgotten and I find it refreshing!

I returned to college after raising four daughters. I have a B.A. in Psychology, a M.A. in Counseling and a Pupil Personnel Services Credential; (PPS). Along with several certifications in the subjects of "bullying Prevention Specialist", "School Counseling Data Specialist" and "College Admissions Specialist"; I was a  volunteer for Hospice for a few years and helped to facilitate Grief Groups and give direct care to patients. I am certified in Mindfulness through MINDFULNESS EXERCISES and have earned a certificate of completion after a year-long experiential Mindfulness program through MINDFUL SCHOOLS.ORG  I give mindfulness presentations to classes at both schools.

I am also the Liaison at Old Adobe Elementary School for the Mentor Me Program.  If you or anyone that you know, is intetested in voluteering one hour a week (during school hours) to spend time with a child,  please reach out to me and we can make that happen!

My passions in life are spending time with my family, skiing, hiking and traveling with my husband. We share our home with a dog, a cat, 5 peacocks, 7 chickens and one mean rooster.

Tara Hayes

  • Tara Hayes is s School Counselor at Miwok Valley Elementary

Hello, I am Tara Hayes,  one of the school counselors at Miwok Valley Charter School. I am a California native and grew up on the beautiful Monterey Peninsula. I have been in the Bay Area for the past 15 years. I hold a B.A. in Psychology, a M.A. in Counseling Psychology and a PPS Credential.

I started out as a school counselor at a public K-8 school in San Francisco about 10 years ago, and have been happyto be here at Miwok for the past 3 years. My favorite part of the job is really getting to know and making personal connections with my students. My aim is to be a steady source of support and encouragement, providing tools and guidance as students navigate both their academic and personal lives.

In additon to my role here at Miwok, I have been teaching yoga and meditation for the last 5 years. Every Sunday morning you can find me teaching my weekly class at Sukha Yoga in Novato. I continue to study yoga, love to learn, and have been known to buy more books than I have tome to read.

I enjoy traveling, good food, music and spending quality time with my husband and watching our 1 year old son, Finn, explore the world. We love hiking, the beach, going on local adventures or just relaxing in our backyard. If we are breathing fresh air, we are happy.

Hi! I am Kim Buksa and I am one of the School Counselors at Sonoma Mountain Elementary on Fridays. I have a special knack for connecting with kids. I bring a calm, easy presence, warm-hearted compassion and a sense of humor to my work. This makes counseling a place that children want to be.
I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Sonoma State University and my Masters in Counseling at CIIS in San Francisco. From there I held internships in San Francisco, Novato, Santa Rosa and Petaluma. I settled in Petaluma with my family where I got licensed as an MFT and started my work as a therapist in private practice and a school counselor.Over time I have developed this specialty working with children and adolescents. I find that my work with kids, both as a school counselor and as a therapist in private practice is deeply fulfilling and immeasurably fun! I feel incredibly lucky every day to get to do the work that I love.
