Breakfast Program Begins Monday February 1, 2010 La Tercera will be offering a breakfast program beginning next week, February 1. Breakfast will be available from 8:00-8:15 each morning. Students can pick up the breakfast and eat in the multi until 8:15 and then take whatever they have left and eat it during the first five minutes of class or save it until snack recess. We will no longer be serving snacks during morning recess. The purpose of switching to the breakfast program is to provide students with a protein rich, nutritious snack to last them until lunch. Many schools have experienced profound benefits once they've implemented as similar type of breakfast program. Students who purchase the Grab and Go breakfast will receive: 1. Either yogurt, a hard-boiled egg or string cheese (each day two of these three will be available). 2. Either cereal or a granola bar 3. Fresh fruit or apple sauce and, 4. Choice of milk or fruit The cost for a fully paid breakfast is $1.25. The breakfast program is also part the free and reduced lunch program so, students who receive free lunch will also receive a free breakfast. For students on reduced lunch prices, breakfast will cost $0.30. We have been trying to get a breakfast program started at La Tercera for many years and we are pleased that we finally are able to offer this. Many students are hungry when they arrive at school and, as a result, have a difficult time focusing on their work. Hunger also effects student's moods and social interactions so we expect to see significant improvement in both academic work as well as behavior and reduced tardiness. Parents can drop money off in the office to be placed in your child's account for the paid breakfasts (just like for lunches). If your child does not eat at home in the mornings, please encourage them to pick up a Grab and Go breakfast in the multi when they arrive at school.

What's New at La Tercera? Accelerated Reader (posted 11/16/09) At La Tercera School, students are actively using the Accelerated Reader (AR) program.
Using Accelerated Reader, students are encouraged to select books at their own level, read, and take a computerized quiz at Renaissance Place, the AR web site, to measure their comprehension. Book levels can be adjusted up or down, depending on how successful the student is at their current level. Reading is one of the most important skills children will ever learn. The child who reads well and loves to read will excel in school and achieve personal growth.
The most important goal regarding Accelerated Reading (AR) is to encourage a love for reading by developing confidence through practice. Research demonstrates that reading practice is the most important factor in a student's literacy development. Literature-based reading practice allows students to perfect the reading skill they learn so that they can move beyond the struggle of decoding text and begin reading for learning and pleasure. Accelerated Reading is an individualized reading program for students. The book levels range from 0.2 to 13.5 so we gave a wide variety of books for students to select. We encourage students to choose books within their reading level that are of interest to them. The love of reading will develop when students are not frustrated by the text in the books they select. Accelerated Reading is a wonderful tool for allowing this love of reading to happen.
Accelerated Reader has three main objectives: · To dramatically improve student reading performance, as measured by standardized tests · To improve student's critical-thinking skills · To instill in students a lifelong love of reading Here is the AR website which allows a student, parent or teacher to login: https://hosted89.renlearn.com/282810/ Parents request a password and then monitor their child's progress. The username for students is the first letter of their first name followed by the first 4 letters of their last name (example - john smith's username would be jsmit). The password would be the student's initials (js). Once logged in, a student clicks "take a quiz." The student/parent can then search for books by title or author. The ATOS book level is listed for each book (2.2 means second year, second month) Remember to bookmark the site so you can return to your log-in page for future use. Accelerated Reader is a great way that parents can participate in their child's learning. Walk and Roll Day (posted 10/12/09) Walk and Roll Day was a great success! Here are the pictures to prove it: http://extracredit.blogs.pressdemocrat.com/10992/more-walk-and-roll-photos/ . Why Promote Walking and Bicycling? Communities are using the walk or bike to school as the first step to change community culture and create environments that are more inviting for everyone, young and old. Here are some reasons to support walking and biking to school: http://www.walktoschool.org/why/index.cfm . ******************************** Visual Thinking Strategies (posted 9/28/09) Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) is an exciting new program at LT this year.
